Composite Fillings

Silver amalgam fillings have been the standard for back teeth for decades. Advancements in dental technologies and materials have now created tooth colored composite fillings strong enough and durable enough to be used in posterior restorations. Many patients are opting to have their silver fillings replaced with composites for aesthetic reasons, as well as metal allergies.

Composite fillings have been used in anterior teeth since the 1960s; however, newer materials make even these fillings more natural-looking and feeling, with more added strength and better wear than their predecessors.

Crowns and Bridges

A tooth can be severely damaged or broken, or it could have a very large cavity that would render it vulnerable to further injury. In such an instance, a crown may be recommended. Crowns are also used to secure a dental bridge. The teeth on either side of a space are prepped and covered with crowns, which are attached to an artificial tooth to replace the missing tooth. These anchor teeth are called the abutment teeth.

Crowns can be made from various materials. Stainless steel  crowns are usually used on children when they have large cavities in baby  teeth. These teeth will eventually shed, and the crown protects the tooth from  further damage, so it can remain until the permanent tooth is due to erupt.  Stainless steel is also used for temporary crowns.

Adults often choose porcelain fused to metal for a more  natural look; however, dental crowns can also be made from metal alloys,  resins, all ceramic, all porcelain or zirconia. Your dentist will consult with  you regarding the advantages and disadvantages of your various options.

If you have one or more teeth missing and would like to explore the possibility of getting a bridge, or if you have a tooth that needs a crown, contact Dr. Crandall & Associates. Our dental clinics are located in Dellwood, Maplewood and White Bear Lake. Call today to schedule an appointment.

Dental crowns add stability and protection for severely damaged teeth or those with large fillings. A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth and restores your smile. Call Dr. Crandall & Associates for information. We have dental clinics located in White Bear Lake, Maplewood and Dellwood.
